Cambodia Travel Safety

But things have changed

I need HELP with planning a trip to Cambodia and Laos

My husband and I have 11 days to spend in Cambodia and Laos. We will be arriving in Phenom Penh coming from southern Vietnam. I am having difficulty figuring out if we have time to go to Battambang as well as Siem Reap. If so, does it make sense to go by land from Phenom Penh to Bannambang and then on to Siem Reap or is that too time consuming. We like to visit smaller places that are less touristy.

The other question has to do with Laos. We will probably visit the 2 main cities in Laos. If we had to choose between Bannanbang in Cambodia and Vang Vieng iin Laos as smaller places to visit, if anyone has been to both and can compare them for me, that would be most appreciated.

Also, we will be arriving in Laos in mid April around the time of the New Year. I don't know if this is good or not. Also, is it better to be in the bigger cities or a smaller place for this celebration?

In general we like the people and cultural part of traveling and try to keep sightseeing to a minimum. Any thoughts or suggestions which you may have about travel in these two countries would be most appreciated.
