Welcome to The Kingdom of Wonder – Cambodia!
I first moved to Cambodia over 20 years ago and it was love at first sight. This compact part of Southeast Asia has a way of enchanting visitors so they will want to come back and explore more of the Khmer kingdom. This happened to me over and over again. From north to south, and from famous UNESCO sites to the warm welcome of a small village homestay, Cambodia and the Khmer people are proud to share their rich heritage and culture.
I recommend travelers not limit their exploration to Siem Reap and its temples. Angkor Wat and the majesty of the Khmer Empire are truly mesmerizing– a must see destination. But many other places of ancient ruins and natural scenery are equally appealing on a smaller scale and without the distraction of huge crowds of people. Spending time in the countryside, travelers will also have more opportunity to interact with the local people. Hearing their stories is equal parts charming and inspiring. Cambodian people are enthusiastic about sharing their food and customs, hosting foreigners and, despite the language barrier, communicating their genuine happiness. My favorite word to describe Cambodian people would be the “smile”…they are smiling all the time and it is very contagious!
Cambodia is not just a place to visit. To see the country is to experience the people in their everyday lives. It has so much to offer that for me it’s definitely more than a destination, it’s a passion!
